Concrete dry time

Filed under: Wall and Floor Tiling — admin2 @ 5:47 pm

Q

How long should I tell a customer to let a 4 inch concrete slab to dry before tiling it?
A
There sre so many different answers to this question. The answers vary from 3 days to 8 Weeks but there are a lot of factors. Type of Screed, Weather during laying and setting, Temperatures, way it was mixed and laid etc etc. I have talked to a construction engineer about this and to a builder with 30 years experience and fantastic reputation. The general concencus seems to be 14 days under normal conditions.

I now try and promote and get all my customers to have ditra matting laid. Problem solved provided they don’t mind the expense

I have to say I’m confused now.

Most previous posts on here have suggested 6 weeks drying time for concrete. I thought this was to allow the concrete to cure not just to dry although I have to confess to not knowing the chemical reactions that are taking place.

Sand & cement screeds should be one week for each inch depth, again according to previous posts on here.

If using quick set cement as sold by BAL & Ardex, then you can tile after 24 hours.

Tilinglogistics, I’m not having a go but I am still concerned by you trying to persuade customers to part with more money to have Ditra Matting. As I have said before, I have not used it and it does seem to have some excellent uses. I cannot understand however, why you want to cause the customer additional unnecessary expense by installing it over concrete.

I have nothing to do with Ditra other than the fact I used it because of advice from this forum and I love the stuff!!! Please go and either read the tech specs on Ditra in full or ask Schluter to send you an info pack with samples then come back to me after you have read it and thought about it. I don’t and never will persuade any customer to have anything they don’t want. I explain to all clients the options together with the pro’s and con’s, then, I advise them what I personally would do, then I leave them to make a decision. Ditra in my opinion rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif is the absolute perfect solution for new screed. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Jase,

Bal who’s initials are probably on all PITT employees pyjamas biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif suggest eight weeks. Like I said before there are a lot of factors to take into account. In the real world try telling a customer who has had an extension going on for six months and its 3 months behind they have got to wait another 2 months before you will tile it. Because the next tiler behind you will tile it if it’s been down 24 hours and he’s got no work on.

there are alot of factors but 6 weeks and green screed adhesive would be fine on this job..

Ok I’ve read the tech spec and it it does seem to eliminate the need to wait for the concrete to cure before tiling.

Having re-read your posts, it looks like you are recommending Ditra matting to those customers that do not want to wait for the concrete to cure and can afford to pay for the matting. I don’t have a problem with that.

I had mis-understood and assumed you were recommending it for all installations ohmy.gif

Regards.
